CDJ-1500X Reaction: Why I’d Still Choose an RX3 or AZ
The new AlphaTheta CDJ-1500X is here—but is it really the budget-friendly modular player DJs have been waiting for?
In this quick Music Gear Mondays reaction, I share my honest take on the CDJ-1500X and where I think it fits compared with the XDJ-1000MK2, XDJ-RX3, XDJ-AZ, and Denon DJ SC6000.
I definitely see the CDJ-1500X as a major upgrade from the XDJ-1000MK2. The larger screen, physical Hot Cues, modern rekordbox workflow, Wi-Fi, cloud access, and streaming options are all welcome additions.
However, once you purchase two players and add a separate mixer, the complete setup may not be as budget-friendly as buying an RX3 or XDJ-AZ.
To me, the CDJ-1500X makes the most sense for a bar, lounge, or smaller club that wants a modular setup with the flexibility to connect turntables, additional media players, or other equipment through a separate mixer.
I also respond to some of the social media pushback surrounding the CDJ-1500X’s RCA-only audio output. RCA will be completely usable for many DJs and smaller venues, but I understand why people expect more connection options from a professional modular player—especially when the older XDJ-1000MK2 offered a digital output.
Streaming is another major part of AlphaTheta’s new direction, but I do not think most working DJs are ready to completely abandon prepared USB libraries yet. By the time streaming becomes the primary workflow for the majority of DJs, we may already be looking at another generation of DJ equipment.
