Exploring the MPC Key 61 Workflow | Music Gear Mondays

In this episode of Music Gear Mondays, we take a first look at the Akai MPC Key 61 and explore what it feels like to create music inside the modern MPC ecosystem.

Rather than diving deep into every feature, this episode focuses on a simple goal: turning the machine on, exploring the workflow, and making a quick beat.

For many producers, the MPC represents a bridge between traditional hardware instruments and modern digital production tools. The MPC Key 61 expands on that legacy by combining the classic MPC pad workflow with a full-size keyboard and standalone production environment.

This allows producers to compose melodies, program drums, and build arrangements without needing to rely on a computer.

A Brief History of the MPC

Before the MPC became one of the most iconic beat-making tools in music production, it started with the work of Roger Linn, who designed the groundbreaking LinnDrum in the early 1980s.

Roger Linn later partnered with Akai to create the first MPC units, which combined sampling technology with velocity-sensitive pads. This changed the way producers interacted with rhythm, turning drum programming into a physical performance.

One of the most influential producers to embrace this workflow was J Dilla, whose use of the MPC helped define a groove-focused style of production often referred to as “Dilla Time.” Instead of perfect quantization, his beats embraced human timing and swing, giving hip-hop a unique rhythmic feel that still inspires producers today.

The MPC Key 61 Workflow

The MPC Key 61 builds on decades of MPC development by combining:

• A standalone music production environment
• A 61-key synth-action keyboard
• Classic MPC performance pads
• A touchscreen interface
• Built-in synth engines and instruments

In this episode we load a drum kit, tap out a groove on the pads, add a bassline using the keyboard, and quickly layer a few musical elements to create a simple beat.

The goal is to demonstrate how quickly ideas can come together inside the MPC environment.
